The first publication from the Peppercanister Press, which Kinsella set up at his home in Dublin, primarily to publish pamphlets and individual poems in limited editions without relying on submissions to journals or magazines.

Butcher's Dozen was written in response to Bloody Sunday, in which 13 demonstrators were killed by British troops in Londonderry (Derry), Northern Ireland, and the ensuing tribunal which failed to prove that the Irish protesters were armed at the time they were killed.  Kinsella revised it in 1992.
