New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1944.  First edition with Scribner's "A".

Considered one of the most profound and relevant works by the influential theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, and certainly the fullest statement of his political philosophy. Written and first read during the prolonged, tragic world war between totalitarian and democratic forces, Niebuhr’s book took up the timely question of how democracy as a political system could best be defended. (from U. of Chicago Press ed.).

Near fine, a tight and seemingly unread copy, slight bump to front board and with some light scratches to rear board.  Dust wrapper is very good indeed, light rubbing to the extremities, crease at the bottom of the front panel, some spots of lost color to the spine.

An uncommonly nice copy, printed under wartime conditions and not often found in collectible condition.
